Midway United Methodist Church is sponsoring a hurricane relief effort from Sunday Sept. 3 – 24. We need your help in packing what we call “flood buckets” to send to storm victims.
WHAT ARE “FLOOD BUCKETS?”
Flood buckets (or “cleaning buckets”) are clean 5-gallon buckets filled with a very specific list of cleaning supplies most needed by flood victims. After the waters recede and flood victims are able to get back into their homes, the painstaking process begins of removing wet belongings, salvaging what they can, and making their homes clean and safe to live in as soon as possible. In some cases, residents can live in one part of the home while the other is being cleaned or renovated.
Once the immediate tasks are done, they must begin the overwhelming task of cleaning every inch of the home. Items in these flood buckets were chosen specifically to help with the tasks above.
CAN I PUT WHATEVER I WANT IN ONE?
No. Use this list of items requested for EACH bucket. Please note that this list is very specific. Brands don’t matter but the number and size of items have been carefully chosen for need, weight (to estimate shipping costs), and for ability to fit inside the bucket with the lid securely closed. Do NOT substitute items.
Please buy ONLY what is listed. All items donated must be NEW.
Click here for a video showing how to pack the bucket.
DO I HAVE TO GET EVERYTHING ON THE LIST?
No. You may buy individual items which can be donated & packed by volunteers into buckets later. Or feel free to complete an entire bucket! This drive is ideal for scout troops, neighborhoods, book clubs, etc. as the cost of entire bucket and supplies is about $75.
WHERE DO I GET THE SUPPLIES?
Midway Ace Hardware – 4947 Atlanta Hwy in Alpharetta (across from Publix, near Post Rd) – carries all the items listed, and you’ll receive a 10% discount on those. Look for the display at the main entrance and you’ll see a printed shopping list. They’ll even hold the donated items for you, for the church to pick up.
Midway Walmart – 5455 Atlanta Hwy in Alpharetta (by Dairy Queen) also carries all the items listed.
Many items can also be found in many other stores (including Dollar Tree and Publix). Just bring your purchases to Midway United Methodist Church -5025 Atlanta Hwy (corner of Hwy. 9 & Campground) – and leave them in the designated collection bin under the large covered entrance.
CAN MY GROUP COLLECT SUPPLIES IN A DRIVE?
Yes! If you know of an organization who would like to begin a flood bucket drive, we strongly support you! You may email or call 678-333-5529 for tips and suggestions to ensure a successful drive.
WHERE DO THE COMPLETED BUCKETS GO?
Flood buckets will be collected in a local warehouse then shipped to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) distribution centers closer to the affected areas. UMCOR works with local emergency management agencies to get the buckets in the hands of those who need them most, without getting in the way of recovery efforts.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE TIME TO SHOP?
