Helplessness. We’ve all felt it. It’s particularly prevalent in times of natural disaster as we watch scenes of gut-wrenching loss and fear.
The good news is we don’t have to succumb to those feelings of helplessness. We get to be the church every minute of every day – whether we’re in a steepled building, at home, at work, or out and about – by being the hands and feet of Christ…putting His love into action. And we’re in a position to invite others to join in on that outreach.
We hope you feel led to participate in our “Fill the Bucket 2018” drive. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) works worldwide providing relief to victims of unrest or disaster. One way we can help here at home: create “flood buckets.” Flood buckets are filled with cleaning supplies (a very specific list of items and sizes, to ensure they fit in the bucket and don’t exceed a certain shipping weight) that are most needed by storm victims as they set about cleaning their flood-ravaged homes after hurricanes. Many thousands of these buckets will soon be in the hands of those who are feeling helplessness beyond which we can fathom.
Midway has set a goal of funding 100 buckets. Can you help?
If you were at Midway in Fall 2017, you’ll remember a similar campaign, where we provided a list of materials and many folks made their own buckets. This year – to maximize our impact – we will be accepting monetary donations ONLY.
Please do NOT bring in any physical cleaning items. We’ll be unable to utilize those.
We’ll purchase all the items needed in bulk (we have connections that will make your $ go farther). Then we’ll have a packing party the first week of November to make the buckets to be shipped to the disaster response warehouse in Atlanta.
Approximate cost to fill one full bucket: about $65. But ANY donation is welcome; no amount is too small.
Checks should be made out to MUMC with “Hurricane relief” noted. 100% of these donations will go toward purchasing items to make flood buckets.
Donations may also be made ONLINE, so anyone across the world can donate to Midway’s efforts, and know they’re making an immediate impact. If you give online, under “Give To:” click the down arrow, then click “Hurricane relief.” Then, please click the button near the bottom of the giving screen to “Cover card processing fees.”
